My favorite play from this past week:
Miami Dolphins (2024) vs. WASH. Commanders
Dolphins running Long Trap from Pistol vs. 6-1 front
Week “ZERO” of the Opening Week of College Football starts this weekend.
Here are a few of the games I’m looking forward to:
Montana State @ New Mexico
FCS Montana State looks to be the favorite heading into this game against Lobo New Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall and company. Tommy Mellot returns as the starter for the Montana State Bobcats and looks to continue building on the success he’s had during his time in Bozeman. New Mexico looks to start the Mendenhall era off on the right foot with a ton of optimism buzzing around the program. Bronco Mendenhall, who was last the Head Coach at The University of Virginia (before stepping down following the 2021 season) looks to continue his legacy as a methodical program builder after a few years away from football. I look forward to seeing Montana State’s offense in this game, known for their QB running schemes on the back of Tommy Mellot.
North Alabama @ Southeast Missouri State
University of North Alabama Head Coach Brent Dearmon looks to best last year’s 3-8 record in year two at the helm. I’m mostly excited about this game because Coach Dearmon is a friend of fullbacks. A former offensive coordinator himself, UNA has been known to run inside veer out of I-formation (see image below) and repeatedly give their fullbacks opportunities in the run game. Anytime those two things are in the playing cards, I’m in.

This Week’s Chalk Talk:
Single Back Power
Today’s modern offenses often come with modern challenges, one of which may be finding creative ways to incorporate downhill, “old school”, smash-mouth football into a spread offense. Other times, there may be personnel hurdles that must be overcome or (bent-in-your-favor) to get the most out of both your players and the schemes you want to base your offense around. Today, we’re talking about running Single back Power from 11/12 Personnel.
